This is the last instalment in our six-week lecture series on the world of New Zealand art. Enjoy stimulating lectures and lively discussions over a glass of wine. Due to unforeseen circumstances it replaces Ron Brownson's talk, I Hate Having my Photograph Taken! Human Life after the Selfie which was originally scheduled for Wednesday 2 November 2016.

What makes a memorable photograph, one with lasting power? This was the question faced by Te Papa curator Athol McCredie in selecting work for his book New Zealand Photography Collected. In this illustrated talk you will hear about the criteria he used to whittle down many tens of thousands of images into the 400 used for the book. He will present a selection of examples that range from the sublime to the surreal, the familiar to the forgotten and the 1850s to the present.

Presented by Chapman Tripp.

Athol McCredie is curator photography at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, where he has worked since 2001. Prior to that he was curator and acting director at Manawatu Art Gallery (now Te Manawa) and he has been involved with photography as a researcher, curator and photographer since the 1970s. His publications include New Zealand Photography Collected, Witness to Change, Fields of Golden Daffodils and Brian Brake: Lens on the World.
