Dr Christine Whybrew (Heritage New Zealand) discusses her research on two of New Zealand’s best-known nineteenth-century photographers, Alfred and Walter Burton.
Christine Whybrew graduated from the University of Otago in 2010 with her PhD entitled 'The Burton Brothers Studio: Commerce in Photography and the Marketing of New Zealand, 1866-1898'. Her background is in museums and art galleries, particularly historic photographic collections. She is currently a heritage advisor for Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
Christine’s research into nineteenth-century commercial photography examines the photograph as an object and scrutinises material properties to consider the context in which the photographers operated. She will demonstrate this methodology in relation to a single photograph from the Burton Brothers’ Maori at Home series.
