Art and crime come together all too often, and yet the reporting and writing about this dark side of our art history is given little attention. This illustrated lecture by Penelope Jackson is a bid for more transparency about the illicit activities and ultimately, why art crime matters!

Penelope is an art historian specialising in researching and writing about art and crime. She began her career at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and went on to be the director and curator of Tauranga Art Gallery. Her book, The Art of Copying Art (Palgrave Macmillan) was awarded Best Book for 2023 at the Art Writing and Publishing Awards (AAANZ), and her latest book, UNSEEN: Art and Crime in Australia was published in 2025. Jackson has been the recipient of multiple writing residencies and is now an adjunct research associate at Charles Sturt University, NSW.
