In the early twentieth century, New Zealanders followed the example of American and Australian artists and made the trip to Europe. Eager to visit the galleries and to see more recent directions in painting, many studied in London and Paris, or went to work at one of the artist colonies that had been established in France and along the English coast. For some, the attractions of Europe proved to be to compelling, and they remained. Julie King considers the artistic life and legacy of three of this country's best-known expatriate painters: Frances Hodgkins, Raymond McIntyre and Sydney Lough Thompson.
Julie King came from England to teach art history at the University of Canterbury. She has curated nationally touring exhibitions on Sydney Lough Thompson and Margaret Stoddart, and is the author of Sydney Lough Thompson: At Home and Abroad, Flowers into Landscape: Margaret Stoddart and Olivia Spencer Bower: Making Her Own Discoveries. She has written about many aspects of art, and contributed to numerous major publications.
