Portrait of a fRACTURed mind

By Andrew Shepherd

I thought I had ecclectic taste and this just proves it. . . It's a collection of stuff I like, reminders of good times and great exhibitions and - if you know me - a few obvious jokes. I hope you enjoy.
I wanted to select some past exhibitions
also but couldn't; so some of my choices reflect old favorites and fond memories from when I first started working at the gallery.
The Bulletin I've included was the only refernce I could find to add of the Giacommetti exhibition back in 2006 - 2007.

Gallery Guides leading Brian Brake tours

Gallery Guides leading Brian Brake tours

A short walk along the boulevard from the Gallery, Canterbury Museum has reopened its doors to the public. One of the opening exhibitions is Brian Brake: Lens on the world developed and toured by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and presented in partnership with Christchurch Art Gallery.

Shards

Neil Dawson Shards 2002

Prior to working for the gallery, I'd always associated Neil Dawson with his public sculptures: I loved the fact that we got to walk past this piece in the back of house corridors of the gallery. Not too shabby an office really. . .

Man at an outdoor cafe

Glenn Busch Man at an outdoor cafe 1972

I love the expression on this dude! He's still in the 50's methinks, but looking sharp nonetheless. . .

No Names for Things No String for 03

Julia Morison No Names for Things No String for 03 2003

I loved seeing all Julia's work in the context of the 'a loop around a loop' exhibition: such a great show! I really opened my eyes to a lot of art I had previously not appreciated.

The Naked and The Nude

Take a tour of The Naked and the Nude with senior curator Justin Paton.

Bacchanalian Feast

Girolamo Nerli Bacchanalian Feast c. 1887

To prove it's not all about big art.

Untitled

Paul Johns Untitled 1998

I really enjoyed justin's commentary for 'The Naked and The Nude': I've included a couple of images of works from that show, as well as the Audio itself.

Untitled

Bill Sutton Untitled

The model for this (and other) Sutton painting(s) is the father of a good friend of mine. A more obvious personal connection than some of the works I've picked I guess.

In Camera

Martin Whitworth In Camera 2000

Recognisable and disturbing: or is it just me?

Raymond Gilbert

Leo Bensemann Raymond Gilbert

Economical and effortless.

Examples of Flora and Fauna from the South Seas

Marian Maguire Examples of Flora and Fauna from the South Seas 2004

I love the detail of Marian's work. And her Tango classes are awesome too.

Portrait of a girl

Graham Bennett Portrait of a girl

Twiggy nextdoor? Love the butterfly in the backgorund.

Proof of Cascade

Andrew Drummond Proof of Cascade 2004

There were several of these photos in the Drummond survey show: I think they really highlight the contrasts of the West Coast beautifully.

A watercolour of a favorite childhood holiday spot; Bliss!

Wide bowl

Ann Robinson Wide bowl 1999

I love the way cast glass plays with light: this image captures it beautifully.

Olivia Spencer Bower - The Artist’s Living Room

Marti Friedlander Olivia Spencer Bower - The Artist’s Living Room 1978

I think this photo is a great example of the way Friedlander managed to make you want to meet her subjects.

#2 The Casualty from When the Paradigm Shift Hits the Fan

Barry Cleavin #2 The Casualty from When the Paradigm Shift Hits the Fan 2006

I started at the Gallery half way through the Paradigm Shift project, so this artwork has always had a wry appeal.

An Otira Stream [also known as Mountain Rata]

Margaret Stoddart An Otira Stream [also known as Mountain Rata] c. 1927

Another favorite area: my local roots must be showing!

Fatal shore

Tony de Lautour Fatal shore 1999

Visitors have pointed out that this work is signed by someone other than the credited artist. I was very happy when this was added to the collection.

Shag Pile

Bill Hammond Shag Pile 1994

As is often the case for me, this work of Bill's appeals on many levels. . .

The Thames from Chelsea

Rita Angus The Thames from Chelsea 1958

I am in awe of most watercolour artists and have always preferred Angus's work in this media to her others. I think this effortless sketch has great detail and energy.

Girl with shears

Don Driver Girl with shears 1980-1985

30/11/2011 - Just found this one when I was searching the colleciton for the Copyright project (for something else entirely). Isn't she a hoot?

Railway Crossing, Canterbury

Ivy Fife Railway Crossing, Canterbury c. 1945-c. 1946

Glenn Busch Lady at a home for old women, Auckland 1973

Playground 2

Vivian Lynn Playground 2 1975

11/01/2012: I love my job! I stumbled across this work in the course of a days copyright investigations for an un-related artist). Kind of creepy, but kind of fun at the same time. And I love the colour (on-my computer screen at least. . . ).

It's rewarding to see some of our staff also becoming successful artists.

19/01/2012: Lucky enough to have examples of Shannon's work at home. Need to work on the others. . .
