8 March 2026

Raymond McIntyre Self-Portrait 1915. Oil on wood panel. Collection of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, gift of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, 1941
Dynamic and progressive paintings and woodcuts from one of Aotearoa’s New Zealand foremost modernist artists.
Expatriate painter Raymond McIntyre (1879–1933) is renowned for his remarkable modern street scenes and elegant portraits. Born and raised in Ōtautahi Christchurch, he left behind New Zealand’s conservative art scene in 1909, moving to London to experience first-hand the emergence of modernism in British and European painting. McIntyre thrived in London, and his work from this time is dynamic and progressive. He developed a successful career, exhibiting with the prestigious New English Art Club and the London Group as well as having his paintings reproduced in leading English art magazines. Drawn from public and private collections, A Modernist View is a survey of McIntyre’s work offering a rare and long overdue opportunity to experience a survey of paintings, watercolours and woodcuts by one of the country’s foremost expatriate artists.
