Raymond McIntyre relished going to the theatre while living in Ōtautahi Christchurch, something attested to in the subject of this study. It depicts the actor Julius Knight playing Gil de Berault, the notorious gambler, adventurer and swordsman, iin the play ‘Under the Red Robe’ which was performed at the city’s Theatre Royal in early 1899. McIntyre’s love of the theatre continued in London, and he regularly wrote home to his family about the latest plays and actors he had seen.
