Unlike many of his expatriate contemporaries – including Frances Hodgkins, Owen Merton and Sydney Lough Thompson – who visited France regularly, Raymond McIntyre was content with sourcing much of his subject matter in the London suburb of Chelsea where he lived. He did visit Britanny, France, in 1912, and it is thought on the same trip spent time at the seaside village of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. With its quaint streets, ancient buildings and pleasant location overlooking the Somme estuary, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme was a popular spot for artists, including McIntyre’s contemporary Frances Hodgkins who was also based there in 1912.
