WORD Christchurch presents its most exciting festival yet. The spirit of adventure, and of 125 years of women's suffrage, runs through the festival with writers who take risks in their lives as well as their work.
Juno Dawson writes dark teen thrillers and is also the author of several non-fiction books for young people that tackle relationships, sexuality and mental health. In 2015, Juno announced her intention to undergo gender transition and live as a woman, which she wrote about in The Gender Games, her first book for adults, and which has been optioned for television by Benedict Cumberbatch. Her latest YA novel, Clean, tackles addiction and rehab. Juno grew up writing imaginary episodes of Doctor Who, so the news she is writing the first official novel to feature the female Doctor is huge. She chats to fellow YA novelist Karen Healey about transformations and writing difficult subjects for a teenage audience.
