Join the Friends for a visit to Takahanga Marae in Kaikōura.
Takahanga Marae is the standing place for Ngāti Kura. The original marae was built around 450 years ago, the current marae built in the mid-1980s and the wharenui (meeting house) officially opened in January 1992. The Wharenui was designed by the late artist Cliff Whiting, and both it and the grounds contain a variety of major site-specific sculptures and artworks by Māori and Pākehā artists including Bill Hammond, Michael Smither, Chris Booth, Ann Noble, Bronwyne Cornish and Neil Dawson.
After being formally welcomed onto the marae, we will eat local kai for lunch and learn the stories behind the history, taonga and art works.
This is a unique opportunity to go on to the Marae. We will leave by bus from Christchurch Art Gallery at 8.30am and return around 5pm. Cost includes bus, morning tea, lunch and koha.
