Enjoy a Sunday afternoon of beautiful chamber music with Camerata Strings under the baton of Patrick Shepherd and Chris Reddington in response to chosen works in the Gallery's collection.
Musical Colours explores the connections between what we hear and what we see and what better place to do this in than an art gallery? The atrium of the Christchurch City Art Gallery is not only a great space for musical performance but also provides another layer for the concert, that of situating the sonic within the visual. To this end, there are three world premieres in this concert, all using as their starting point paintings in the current collection at the Gallery. Barbara Maguire’s The Quiet Sea was inspired by Margaret Stoddart’s restful Diamond Harbour while Patrick Shepherd’s Not of this time uses John Pule’s Not of This Time (Dreamland) as both a conceptual and conceptual framework. Max Gimblett’s three sumi ink paintings provides the starting point for Chris Reddington’s Enso Triptych.
Also featured in the programme are Sibelius’ celebratory Andante Festivo, Panufnik’s atmospheric Landscape and Holst’s Brook Green Suite.

John Gibb Shades of Evening, the Estuary
By 1880, when the Canterbury Society of Arts was formed, John Gibb was the most popular painter of the Christchurch art world. Gibb was so highly regarded that the very first work acquired for Christchurch’s civic art collection was his Shades of Evening, the Estuary. It was purchased in 1881 by the Canterbury Society of Arts from its inaugural annual exhibition and then presented to the Gallery in 1932. Gibb loved sunsets; the golden hour when there’s still a trace of day in the sky. According to one family member Gibb would drop whatever he was doing in the evening to watch and study the setting sun. His pleasure in the atmospheric effects of evening light is apparent here, as the sun’s last rays create a subtle glow on the clouds, which is also reflected in the water. The view takes in Christchurch’s Ihutai / Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

Gallery Happenings: Grayson Gilmour
In early March we were lucky enough to have the incredibly talented Grayson Gilmour performing at the Gallery, supported by the equally talented Purple Pilgrims and New Dawn. I love these gigs, but there is a lot of work to be done behind the scenes to make sure that, by the time the public walk in the door, the foyer is gig ready. The process normally feels like a long, slow marathon with a sprint at the final corner. So here’s a guide to how you too can get the NZI Foyer gig-ready in five (or six) easy steps.
