Rising to 1,938 metres, one of the higher summits of the Polar Range near Arthur’s Pass, the Dome remains a popular challenge for serious climbers. Cecil Kelly painted this view near the spot where, in 1936, Rita Angus would later paint Cass, shifting the perspective anti-clockwise. Exhibited at the Canterbury Society of Arts in 1925, it was praised for its “colour, brilliance, strength […] in keeping with the calm dignity of the mountain.”
