McCahon's Necessary Protection was an exhibition of works from his various series from 1971 to 1976 organised by the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.
The name Necessary Protection was first given to two series of drawings and paintings in 1971 and 1972, but the theme to which it refers recurs in later series and it thus provided an appropriate collective title.
The series in this exhibition included the 10 panel Walk with Me, the 5 panel Shining Cuckoo, Clouds and Noughts and Crossses.
