as there is a constant flow of light

Behind the scenes

On a recent printer's residency at the Otago University's Otakou Press Colin McCahon's huge mural painting Waterfall Theme and variations dominated proceedings.

The painting is positioned right outside the press room and as such it looms up at you everytime you enter and leave the space, it dominates and this was just fine with  me as there have been almost no opportunities to view McCahon's work in Christchurch post those damned earthquakes...but what a painting! the scale is so impressive and it links in nicely with Christchurch Art Gallery's more modest painting as there is a constant flow of Light we are born into the PURE LAND. Several artists submitted mural proposals to University of Otago Library in 1966 (including Ralph Hotere) and these submissions, working paintings in effect, are also on display in the library. Can't wait to reacquaint myself with Christchurch Art Gallery's McCahon's when we re-open.
