Towards the end of Olivia Spencer Bower’s career, she reflected: ‘I paint for myself. That’s the only way for when you paint to please it’s not the honest thing and inhibits the chances of discovery, because there’s no point in writing or painting unless you make your own discoveries.’
Julie King, the author of Olivia Spencer Bower: Making Her Own Discoveries looks at the life and work of one of this country’s most engaging, and best-loved artists. An art historian, Julie has written on many aspects of New Zealand art and curated shows on Sydney Lough Thompson and Margaret Stoddart. Julie is also a Patron of the Friends.
