Join the Friends on an adventure exploring some of the gems of Selwyn.
This large district spans the whenua between the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers from the alps to the ocean, immediately east of Ōtautahi. This trip is focused on Lincoln and Rolleston to showcase three gems within this small subsection of the district.
Our exploration will begin with a guided tour of Te Ara Ātea, the recently opened and stunningly beautiful Rolleston Library. The name Te Ara Ātea was gifted to the community by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, and means unobstructed trail to the world and beyond. It expresses a notion that this is a place for learning, gathering, connecting, exploring and celebrating our heritage and people. A surprise awaits for those who regard Rolleston as a place you whizz past on State Highway 1!
We will then progress to the incredible Broadfield Garden where we will enjoy a picnic lunch in the grounds. Our host, and the creator of this masterpiece, will be on-site to answer questions and guide us around the gardens - this is a truly ‘hidden gem’.
To round off the afternoon we will be treated to a guided tour of the Lincoln University Art Collection. Lincoln University has an enviable collection of original artworks consisting of over 300 paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics. The collection includes works dating from as early as 1639, with the majority of works by contemporary New Zealand artists from the 1970s through to the present day.
