Join the Friends for a talk and viewing of an exhibition, a tour of Kate Sheppard House and morning tea.

Background Matters: Portraiture and Place in Aotearoa is an exhibition that asks what can be revealed when we view the sitter of a portrait in the expanded field of their surroundings.

Drawn from the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata and other key galleries and collections, these works reveal narratives of belonging, self-expression, creativity and care. Far from an afterthought or decorative embellishment, the settings of these portraits speak not only to the vision of their artists but to the lives lived by their sitters, which extend far beyond the boundary of a frame.
Artists include Jacqueline Fahey, Robyn Kahukiwa, Brian Brake and the winner of the Adam Portraiture Award.

After viewing the exhibition we will have a tour of the Kate Sheppard House followed by morning tea.

The exhibition Background Matters: Portraiture and Place in Aotearoa is presented by The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata in partnership with Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House.
