Artist Julia Holderness discusses her current PhD research, the theatre workshop at the Bauhaus and her current exhibition at the Ilam Campus Gallery.
Julia’s installation practice explores domestic ware, applied art, decorative and design histories – categories often overshadowed by the dominance of fine art in New Zealand’s art history.
Combining several influential design archives, both local and international, as sources for contemporary fabrication and re-presentation, her research traces alternative and sometimes imagined histories of modernism in New Zealand. Her PhD project explores appropriation, aesthetic lineages and new methodologies for art historical investigations.
Julia completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in 2002 and is currently undertaking a practice led PhD (Visual Arts) at Auckland University of Technology.
