Research on artists in the First World War suggested that many soldier-artists coped with the terrible conditions on the Western Front by painting what they saw and felt about the war.
The talk will examine many of the paintings these soldiers left behind and consider how war influenced their art when they returned home and the effect
this had on students in the 1920s.
Jenny Haworth’s recently released book Behind the Twisted Wire is the sequel to her very popular The Art of War on New Zealand’s Second World War artists. Well-known as a writer of fiction, she is currently working on a biography of Robert McDougall, who presented the first art gallery to the city.
