Ralph Hotere: Ātete (to resist)
Ralph Hotere: Ātete (to resist)
Celebrating the artistic vision of one of Aotearoa’s most significant artists. As the first major survey exhibition of Hotere’s artistic career for over twenty years, Ātete gathered works from collections across Aotearoa. Hotere’s art charted his journeys throughout Aotearoa and the world, reflecting on his experiences, mātauranga Māori, identity, and politics. This exhibition was shaped by a collective consideration of these journeys, creating meeting points between the major concerns present in Hotere’s work. Featuring formative abstraction, strident works of protest, and landmark works including Black Phoenix and Godwit/Kuaka, Ātete celebrated Hotere’s artistic achievements and brought his vision to a new generation.
Ralph Hotere: Ātete (to resist) was on display in Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū from 27 March to 25 July 2021.
