WORD Christchurch presents its most exciting festival yet. The spirit of adventure, and of 125 years of women's suffrage, runs through the festival with writers who take risks in their lives as well as their work.

In this documentary film, acclaimed writer Philip Hoare confronts our fascination with one of the most mysterious animals in the ocean, the whale. Travelling in the footsteps of Ishmael, the narrator of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, he visits the whaling ports of New England and searches for the truth behind the story. He draws an eerie parallel between Captain Ahab’s crazed pursuit of the great white whale and today’s war on terror, and enters a world haunted by a bloody and violent past. Then, in the three-mile-deep waters of the Atlantic, Hoare has his own encounter with the legendary sperm whale.

This screening runs from 12.30 to 1:45pm.
