Join Kiri Jarden (Ngāi Tahu, Rangitāne) for a fascinating talk about Paemanu: Ngāi Tahu Contemporary Visual Arts exhibiting in the Asia Pacific Triennial in Queensland, and other creative arts projects she has been involved in.
Paemanu: Ngāi Tahu Contemporary Visual Arts was formed by a group of established Ngāi Tahu contemporary visual art professionals including Ross Hemera, Areta Wilkinson, Simon Kaan, Rachael Rakena, Lonnie Hutchinson, Neil Pardington and Nathan Pōhio. Kiri became a trustee in 2015, chair in 2020 and is now co-chair of the organisation dedicated to advancing Ngāi Tahu visual culture through creative and innovative artistic expression. Over the 11 years of existence Paenamu has produced large exhibitions in Te Waipounamu and Australia, fostered connections between/with over 40 artists, created the Paemanu Art Collection and traversed and camped in the Ngāi Tahu takiwā. From November 2024 – April 2025 the group has been part of the collective of artists exhibiting in the Asia Pacific Triennial in Queensland.
As Principal Arts Advisor at Christchurch City Council Kiri leads a small team, charged with development and delivery of Council’s Matariki event Tīrama Mai and various capital public arts projects, manages Toi Auaha, Toi Ōtautahi website, and Council’s arts policies.
Kiri is a proud māmā, a taua with three mokopuna so far, a member of the Rāpaki Māori Women’s Welfare League, reluctant sailor, a gardener and a Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship programme.
