Roger Blackley places the work of Charles Frederick Goldie within a wider context of New Zealand's tradition of Māori portraiture. From the famous rebel Hone Heke to the cosmopolitan Pātara Te Tuhi, we meet some of the celebrities of the Māori world and explore the nature of their engagement with the most distinctive of all genres of New Zealand art.

Roger Blackley teaches nineteenth-century and colonial art history at Victoria University of Wellington. Formerly a curator at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Roger is best known for Goldie, the retrospective of paintings by Charles Fredrick Goldie. His next book is Galleries of Maoriland, exploring Māori depictions in colonial New Zealand.
