Prone Steve 2

Kristin Stephenson Prone Steve 2

This spare and vulnerable drawing of Kristin Stephenson’s husband, Steve, was made as vascular dementia gradually undermined the clear outlines of his personality. He had always loved being drawn by her, and they had agreed that she would record the progression of his condition, however difficult. Here, unflinching lines document his increasingly fluid sense of self and her experience of a familiar body made newly strange. Flung into an untested reality, Kristin and Steve connected through the ordinary. His woolly socks speak to the small comforts they arrived at together to ease the journey.

A warm welcome to B.212, the winter edition of Te Puna o Waiwhetū Christchurch Art Gallery’s Bulletin. As Matariki reappears in our night sky in July, here in Ōtautahi we will celebrate the arrival of Te Rā, the only customary woven Māori sail known to exist. Building on the success of our exhibition Te Puna Waiora: The Distinguished Weavers of Te Kāhui Whiritoi in 2021, it is an incredible privilege for us to share one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant taonga with our audiences.
