HAP Grieshaber woodcuts exhibition catalogue (detail)

The Christchurch Star 14 September 1966
This exhibition is now closed
Hap Grieshaber (1909-1981) has been described as the greatest western exponent of the woodcut. The works in this retrospective exhibition 1934-1968 were selected by his secretary/biographer Margot Fuerst which was sponsored by the Auckland Art Gallery.
Works by Hap Grieshaber had been previously seen in New Zealand in group exhibitions and in the collection of contemporary German art, which toured here in 1965, he was the only printmaker selected. This collection offered an opportunity to see in depth the work of the artist who resurrected the ancient craft of woodcutting and given it new life.
34 works were exhibited including three massive prints, the largest examples of graphic art to be shown in Christchurch.
672 attended the exhibition.
