Spooner and Witt Coillections Exhibtion Catalogue cover (detail)

The fifty drawings and watercolours were selected to illustrate the rise of landscape painting in Britain, and more specifically landscape watercolour between the period 1750-1850.

Half of the exhibits were from the collection of William Spooner, which were bequeathed to the Courtauld Institute, London in 1967. The works of Gainsborough and Constable came from a collection of English and European drawings bequeathed to the Institute by Sir Robert Witt in 1952.

Paintings by Turner were also included in this exhibition.

The exhibition proved popular with audiences.
