This exhibition from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, was sponsored by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council and arranged by the National Gallery, Wellington and the Royal Netherlands Embassy. The collection was purchased by the National Gallery.
The exhibition comprised 48 reproductions of drawings form the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The small detailed works were of scenes of everyday life, landscape and portraiture. A variety of media were used including pencil, inks, chalks, tempera, water colour washes, and charcoal - alone or in combination - and were often on tinted paper which gave an added effect of richness.
Artists represented included Rembrandt, Lucas van Leyden, Jacob van Strij, Jan van Goyen, Jacob Ruisdal and Paulus Potter.
