This exhibition of 13th century pots was dug up from bomb holes within a square mile, formerly bounded by the old city walls of London. It toured Japan and Northern Europe before coming to New Zealand through the British Council from the Guildhall Museum, London.
The 48 pots exhibited were mainly jugs to contain water, milk, and beer or apple cider. There were also cooking pots, beakers and watering pots, the everday items of peasant life. The clay body was usually coarse and sandy and one of the most striking things about these pots was their extreme lightness and thinness.
The potter, David Brokenshire, gave a well-attended talk on medieval pottery on Sunday 14 February 1965.
Admission was one shilling and the catalogue cost two shillings. The catalogue contained articles by Norman Cook and by Britain's leading studio potter, Bernard Leach.
