Marie Shannon's sound work contemplates love, loss, and the longing for emotional connection across distance.
'The Aachen Faxes' are a series of letters sent by New Zealand artist Julian Dashper to his partner Marie Shannon while he was artist in residence in Aachen, Germany, in 1995. (Aachen, he said, 'has the same feeling as Hamilton, except older'.) Excerpts from Dashper's letters are reproduced on the walls of the car park elevator, while the soundtrack features Shannon reading from them, over cello music improvised by Dashper's brother Mark. The Aachen Faxes, Christchurch remix explores the nature of communication in a long-term relationship. It's a work about love, loss, and the longing for emotional connection across distance
