Contemporary French Tapestries exhibition catalogue cover (detail)
This collection of 28 pieces was brought to New Zealand by the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council.
A good cross section of major practioners of the art was represented.
The revival of this art stemmed from Aubusson in France, which was one of the greatest of the old tapestry making centres, and in particular by Jean Lurcat who showed an interest in adorning large modern buildings with the physical and spiritual warmth which only tapestries can provide. There were several examples of his work in the exhibition.
It was a very successful exhibition with 15,000 visitors attending.
