Eighty contemporary Chinese paintings were chosen for display in New Zealand by the National Art Gallery of the Republic of China, Taiwan.
Apart form the traditional scroll painting, the exhibition contained examples of modern Chinese paintings reflecting the influences of Western developments. European art did not make it's full impact until Jesuit pioneer Guiseppe Castiglione came to the court of Emperor Chien Lung late in the 18th Century providing a new glimpse into the laws of perspective.
The opening was attended by the Chinese Ambassador Konsin C. Shah, the Hon. H. J Walker, Minister of Tourism and the Mayor of Christchurch Mr A. R. Guthrey and Mrs Guthrey.
