Brazilian Graphic Arts

This exhibition is now closed

Christchurch, Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington and Dunedin hosted this Brazilian Graphic Arts exhibition. Sponsored by the Embassy of Brazil in conjunction with Air New Zealand and Varig Brazilian Airlines, this was the first time any form of Brazilian art had been brought to New Zealand.

Consisting of 60 etchings, woodcuts and lithographs by 16 young artists, there was an accent on the technique of print on metal and its variations. The artists were mostly from Rio de Janeiro, and the strong influence of the Franco-German artist Johnny Friedlander (1912-1992) was striking.

Two films were shown: Carnival in Rio and Cities of yesterday and Tomorrow.

The exhibition was extended by three days due to popular demand.
