Australian Drawings

This exhibition is now closed

This was an exhibition of Australian drawings curated by Jennifer Phipps, National Gallery of Victoria. The New Zealand tour was organised by the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery with support of the New Zealand Art Gallery Directors Council.

This was a group of large drawings related to Performance Art, and a group of smaller works of private symbolism. The exhibition showed the drawings of artists who had exhibited in major exhibitions in Australia, Europe, Japan and U.S.A., as well as some who were not so well known outside Australia.

The exhibition formed a coherent group of work by artists who have related styles or concepts. The gesture of performance, or making marks, is important in all these drawings. This exhibition had, as far as possbile, included artists who were looked on as amongst the most important in Australia making new imagery, using emblematic signs in their work, and exploiting the expressiveness of drawing techniques.

They were: Mike Parr, Peter Booth, Jenny Watson, John Nixon, Ken Unsworth, Peter Tyndall, Susan Rankine, Dale Frank, Jill Scott and Howard Arkeley.

Most artists were representeded by two works; total approximately 30 works.
