A double feature talk featuring Hatesa Seumanutafa and Faumuina Felolini Maria Tafuna'i.
Join Hatesa Seumanutafa, curator of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous human histories at Canterbury Museum to learn more about the wa’a kaulua on display in Ship Nails and Tail Feathers: Historic Treasures from the Collections of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and Canterbury Museum.
Faumuina Felolini Maria Tafuna’i will then be discussing her sailing and waka building projects in Samoa, which look to revive wayfinding traditions and bring coastal sailing back to her country.
Faumuina is an award-winning journalist and ocean voyager who draws upon the wisdom of celestial navigation and voyaging in her work as founder and CEO of Flying Geese.
Ship Nails and Tail Feathers is a partnership project between Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and Canterbury Museum.
