Salote Tawale sees all her work as self-portraits of a sort. In Ripple, an ocean horizon line connects the Ōtautahi exhibition across the sea to the artist’s homes of Fiji and Australia. Continuing her research into cultural identity and translocated Indigeneity, Salote incorporates references to masi, Fijian tapa cloth, and archival photographs held in the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology taken of Indigenous people in the Pacific that show their reflection inverted in water. This new body of paintings, video and sculptural works are a temporal and geographical triangulation between her past, present and speculative futures.
