Michael works with a range of print media and much of his work is aligned with the long history of printmaking as a vehicle for social and political comment.
The versatility of print provides him with the opportunity to mix old and new media and materials in a variety of formats and scales, both traditional and non-traditional. This has resulted in an ongoing series of satirical medallions, carpets, textiles and works on paper.
Reed has held 25 solo shows in NZ and participated in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally. His works are held in several public gallery collections in New Zealand as well as Het Koninklijk Penningkabinet, Rijksmuseum; the British Museum, London; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Kumu, National Gallery of Estonia, Tallinn, Estonia and the Colorado University Special Collections, Boulder, Colorado, USA. In 2012, in conjunction with Trade Aid NZ, he worked as a print advisor for two craft cooperatives, Kathmandu, Nepal, reviewing printing processes and assisting with the development of new design collections. In 2014 a selection of his work was included in Giving Voice, an exhibition of political art that commenced in Hobart and is now touring in NSW and Victoria, Australia.
Michael Reed (MFA) currently teaches at the School of Art & Design, CPIT, and is a member of the Medallion Artists New Zealand and the International Art Medal Federation (FIDEM).
