Decoding Starlight (Ages 5-8)

Decoding Starlight (Ages 5-8)

Workshop

Friday 10 July 2026 / 11am

Education Centre

Free (but limited to 25 participants)

The Te Whai Ao /Dodd-Walls Centre will be laying down some science this matariki. Lets learn and have fun in this workshop for 5-8 year olds.

If humans have never visited a star, how do we know what they’re made of? In this workshop, you’ll explore how stars make light, how you can use actual quantum physics to decode starlight, and how constellations are all a matter of perspective.

Then it’ll be time to get creative and capture our very own constellation in a jar to take home! Please bring a glass jar with a lid, and make sure it's large enough to hold at least 300 ml of water.

This workshop is limited to 25 participants (plus guardian) so get in early to secure a spot!
