Christchurch-based artist Marie le Lievre talks about her painting practice.
Before attaining a BFA from Ilam in 2006 and embarking upon a career in the arts, Marie studied criminology; arguably, her scientific knowledge informs her artistic practice. The surfaces of Marie's abstract expressionist paintings are deceptively rich, luminous pools, which attest to her ability to manipulate liquids to bring about surprising chemical reactions. Marie went on to attain an MFA with Distinction in painting (Ilam 2008) and has participated in both group and solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand and in Sydney, Paris and Japan. Geographical (Baggage), the work illustrated, was purchased by the Gallery in 2009.
