Dr Melinda Johnston: Humour, Parody and Caustic Social Comment in the Work of Barry Cleavin
Dr Melinda Johnston is a fixed-term lecturer at the University of Canterbury. She was previously exhibitions manager for the University's School of Fine Arts and gained her doctorate from University College London. Melinda's personal research interests include the history of printmaking and politically and socially motivated art. She is currently writing a book on Christchurch artist Barry Cleavin (ONZM). In his prints, Cleavin has maintained a consistently individual approach, with a style that, although immediately recognisable, can range from lightly humorous parody through to caustic social comment. Drawing on works made between 1966 and 2012, this talk will consider Cleavin's prints in their social and historical contexts, providing new insights into his work and thematic concerns.
