After the Aftershocks—What is the Future for Architectural Heritage in Canterbury?
This lecture will examine the impact of the Christchurch earthquakes on heritage architecture in the city and its surroundings. The talk will look at heritage losses but also suggest ways in which we can readjust our thinking about what remains of our architectural heritage. It will be illustrated with photographs showing the impact of the earthquakes on a range of buildings. Dr Ian Lochhead is associate professor of art history at the University of Canterbury. He grew up in Canterbury and studied art history at the University of Auckland and at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. He has taught at the University of Canterbury since 1981 and has written extensively on architecture. In 1999 he published A Dream of Spires: Benjamin Mountfort and the Gothic Revival (Canterbury University Press).
