This month's LocArt visit is with artist and jeweller Barry Clarke.
Barry Clarke has an established reputation as both a jeweller and painter and has been a practicing artist since 1972. Originally from Surrey, England, Clarke settled in New Zealand during the 1980's. A British Merchant Seaman from 1963-1972, the sea has played a vital element in Clarke's artwork. His recent series of rustic boats, painted in relief and wall mounted, reveal nostalgia for this period in his life. Clarke’s striking hand-forged and shaped jewellery utilises semi-precious stones and displays the artist’s ongoing interest in the Minoan, Cycladic and Celtic cultures as well as the modern artists, Brancusi, Picasso, Giocometti and Marini.
This is a unique opportunity to visit the artist in his studio environment and hear him discuss his art processes.
Meet Lydia Baxendell at 52 Hackthorne Rd at 9.50am. Numbers are limited so please email friends@ccc.govt.nz or ring Lydia on 03 981 4343 to book.
