About the artist
Bill Sutton’s interest in regionalist landscapes, which he explored repeatedly in his paintings, was also the source of subject matter for several of his linocuts from the 1940s. Road from Cromwell shows how the linocut proved ideal for Bill’s work, with his sharply cut edges of the lino block accentuating the jagged mountain range, an arching cloud beyond and the empty country road leading into the distance. This linocut incorporates the use of four blocks, all meticulously cut, inked and registered, to create a stunning view of the Central Otago region.
