Making artful comment on the moral shortcomings of eighteenth-century London society, William Hogarth completed A Rake’s Progress, a series of eight paintings, in 1734 before publishing them as popular engravings. In them Tom Rakewell, the prodigal central character, squanders his inheritance for a life of carnal pleasure, and is here already well along the trail to financial ruin and madness.
