With this radical flag, Jacquelyn Greenbank celebrates the history and presence of Chinese greengrocers in Ōtautahi Christchurch – the intriguing title takes its name from one such grocer on nearby Armagh Street. A splayed banana skin tops the flagpole, recalling how imports of green bananas would be hung in the window of living quarters above the shop to ripen, where they also acted as promotion. This playful totem flips a racist slur directed at the Chinese community; the artist’s face merges with a starfruit, visibly reclaiming the long, yet often overlooked, histories of Chinese in Aotearoa New Zealand and the artist’s own Chinese ancestry.
