Votive Figurine

Artist Unknown Votive Figurine

This small, marble sculpture is from an ancient culture that flourished in the Greek Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea over four thousand years ago. It is by far the oldest object here on display. No one knows why figures like this were made, but most have their arms folded and have been found at burial sites.

Head of A Young Woman

Artist Unknown Head of A Young Woman

The small size, appearance, and angled turn of the head of this almost 2,000-year-old marble sculpture suggests it was originally from a Roman stone coffin, or sarcophagus. Heads like this one featured on sarcophagi as decoration, as portraits of the deceased or as representations of mythological figures. We can only guess which one this is.
