George French Angas Monument to Tewhero's Favorite Daughter, at Raroera Pah, Near Otawhao

While on a major drawing expedition through New Zealand in 1844, Adelaide-based George French Angas met and sketched Waikato rangatira Te Wherowhero. At an abandoned pā near Otawhao, he drew the elaborate four-metre-high tomb of the chief’s favourite daughter. Later, at nearby Ngahuruhuru, he was introduced to the tohunga whakairo (master carver) who made it, and the two artists exchanged compliments.
