Joanna Margaret Paul Untitled

In the 1976 catalogue accompanying the exhibition Woman’s Art: Six Women Artists, Joanna Margaret Paul described how her life and her art practice were inextricably linked: “My work is always rooted in the particular circumstances of my domestic life, the objects, clothes, toys, cups, flowers, that speak of myself, my child, my husband and the house, garden, land, that frames my life.” Still-life subjects such as this one highlight these connections.

François Chauveau Christ Appearing To Startled Cardplayers

This surprising scene was recently identified as a preparatory sketch for an engraving by Paris-born painter and engraver François Chauveau. It was produced to illustrate Les Délices de l’esprit [The Delights of the Spirit], a 1658 philosophical and theological work by Jean Desmaret. Chauveau became engraver to the king, Louis XIV, four years later. The signature on the work is an incorrect addition.
