Juliet Peter often used night-time settings for her paintings and prints, perhaps because she spent many evenings up late during midnight firings of the pottery kiln she shared with her husband, Roy Cowan. She also loved the wilder end of their garden in Ngaio, Wellington, with its views up to the hills and stars, and was fascinated by how the moonlight transformed it into a mysterious and magical space. In this work, the garden glows with the blue light of a full moon, as the rising wind gently moves the plants and trees around.
