The Gallery again celebrates the strength and breadth of visual arts practice in Canterbury today with a summertime Emerging Canterbury Artists exhibition.
This group will profile five artists – Francesca Heinz, Simon Lawrence, James Oram, Rachel Brunton and Zina Swanson – who will offer a fresh viewing experience that will surprise and challenge. Heinz's work focuses on large-scale, 3D paintings using untanned animal hides that comment on slaughter and sacrifice; Lawrence's installations combine electronic communication devices, video and natural phenomena; Oram combines materials to create social structures; Brunton's sculptures manipulate the use of space to create fictional environments; and Swanson works with organic materials which comment on the fragility of life cycles.
