A thinly veiled response to the controversial Treaty Principles Bill, Layne Waerea’s bill, which was ‘co-authored’ by OpenAI, is also up for public submission. Her performance will provide an opportunity for public feedback on a proposal to provide greater clarity and guidelines for the activity of waiting in public spaces.

On the 17th of May the public are invited to make submissions of 2 minutes to the Waiting Committee in response to the proposed Bill, or any other Bill, or about the general theme of waiting. Submissions can be oral or musical. If you do not wish to make a submission, you are also welcome to attend as an observer.

The Bill itself is available to be read on the Christchurch Art Gallery balcony.

Waerea uses her experiences as a lawyer to inform her performance interventions, with a particular focus on how te Tiriti o Waitangi must continue to play a critical role in the cultural fabric of Aotearoa New Zealand.

This performance is a part of A Time of Waiting, a series of temporary installations, site activations, and performances that investigate how seemingly passive actions can resonate or become politically charged responses to the relentless pace and demands of contemporary life.

Curated and toured by Chris Braddock, John Vea and Stephen Cleland, with support from Creative New Zealand, Auckland University of Technology and Te Wai Ngutu Kākā Gallery, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Keep an eye on our website for additional performances in this series.
